Thefts at the Archaeological site of pompeii
A priceless fresco has been stolen from the ancient Roman ruins of Pompeii.
The missing fragment, measuring about 20 centimetres in diameter, bore the image of Artemis, the Greek hunting goddess, and was hacked away with a metallic tool, authorities said. It was in the House of Neptune and Amphitrite, in an area closed to the public.
“On March 12, a guardian on patrol reported that a segment of a fresco at the House of Neptune had been removed,” the Pompeii archeological office said in a statement.
The theft was immediately reported to police, but was not publicized until Tuesday “in order not to jeopardize the outcome of the ongoing investigations, which are particularly delicate,” the statement added.
Another fresco fragment, from the House of the Orchard, previously was stolen from an on-site laboratory where it was being restored.
